EnerSys unveils innovative technology to enhance backup power management

EnerSys has announced the integration of cutting-edge embedded technology into its DataSafe® Thin Plate Pure Lead (TPPL) batteries. This enhancement significantly improves backup power management for data centres by enabling real-time battery monitoring, thus optimizing performance and reliability in critical power environments.

As demand for power in data centres continues to surge — fuelled by advancements in sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI) and cryptocurrencies — the International Energy Agency (IEA) projects that power consumption could double by 2026, reaching 1,000 terawatt-hours (TWh), which is comparable to Japan's total annual electricity usage today. This escalating demand places increased pressure on data centres to enhance their backup power systems to guarantee uninterrupted operations.

To tackle these challenges, EnerSys has embedded advanced monitoring technology directly within its lead-acid batteries. This innovative development allows data centre operators to track essential battery parameters, including voltage and temperature, promoting proactive maintenance and minimizing battery-related downtime. The technology is also designed to integrate seamlessly with the EnVision™ Connect system monitor, which provides data-driven insights to enhance performance and operational management.

A recent deployment at a European data centre underscores the effectiveness of this new technology. Prior to a significant international sporting event, the data centre installed 260 DataSafe® batteries equipped with the embedded monitoring technology. The integration with the EnVision™ Connect system monitor enabled more frequent updates on battery status, reducing blind spots and enhancing the centre's ability to proactively manage potential issues. This implementation also minimized the need for emergency maintenance interventions, thereby lowering costs and improving adherence to power resilience standards. Furthermore, the data centre enjoyed increased operational control, reducing risks related to backup power failures.

This case illustrates how EnerSys’ advanced technology, in combination with the EnVision™ Connect system monitor, is establishing new industry standards for data centre backup power monitoring, ensuring efficiency, reliability, and enhanced operational security.
