The extensive deployment, completed in just over nine months, was carried out in collaboration with The AA, Cradlepoint (an Ericsson company), and Gamma Telecom. Panasonic managed the entire process, including project management, testing, installation, training, reporting, and will provide field services maintenance for the next five years.
The connected vehicle solution provides reliable connectivity within a 25-meter radius around each patrol vehicle. By integrating a dual-5G modem setup with primary and backup SIMs, The AA can achieve up to 98% coverage across the UK, ensuring continuous, real-time data flow from vehicle diagnostics, onboard cameras, and call-out systems. This level of connectivity minimizes roadside downtime and boosts operational efficiency.
The solution also reduces total cost of ownership by eliminating the need for multiple cellular plans and devices, preventing unexpected data charges and simplifying device management. Additionally, Panasonic manages Ericsson’s NetCloud Manager platform on behalf of The AA, offering real-time insights into data usage, network performance, and application efficiency via a comprehensive monitoring dashboard. This single-pane view provides The AA with full visibility into fleet connectivity and performance, enabling proactive management.
To further enhance roadside operations, some patrols benefit from a Screen Mirroring Solution, which displays data from the rugged Panasonic TOUGHBOOK device directly onto the vehicle’s infotainment screen. This feature boosts productivity, flexibility, and communication, allowing technicians to diagnose and repair vehicles more rapidly.
“This is a game-changing solution for our patrols. Previously, connectivity was limited to 3G or 4G, which hampered productivity. Now, with Panasonic’s ruggedised routers and partners, we have near 100% connectivity, enabling our technicians to diagnose and fix vehicles more quickly and efficiently. This significantly enhances customer satisfaction,” said Wendy Richardson-Brooks, IT Operations Improvement & Innovation Manager at The AA.
“This deployment demonstrates Panasonic’s dedication to delivering top-tier connectivity solutions within a condensed timeframe. By combining rugged routers, industry-leading network management, and a fully managed service approach, we’re ensuring The AA’s fleet remains at the forefront of technological innovation,” said Nick Miller, EU Sales Strategy Manager at Panasonic TOUGHBOOK.
