Under this five-year agreement, EE will supply 34,000 mobile connections to support frontline workers and facilitate real-time reporting on issues ranging from flooding to farming disease outbreaks across England, Scotland, and Wales.
The deal leverages EE’s extensive 4G mobile broadband network, renowned for its strong coverage in rural areas — a key focus of the industry-led Shared Rural Network (SRN) project, which has invested over £1 billion to enhance connectivity in underserved regions. The enhanced network aims to ensure that DEFRA’s personnel stay connected in even the most remote locations, particularly during emergencies.
Beyond connectivity, BT has committed to supporting DEFRA’s environmental goals. The partnership grants access to advanced tools such as eSIM capabilities and BT’s Carbon Dashboard, a platform that monitors electricity use and carbon emissions at the workload and application level. These tools are designed to help DEFRA minimize waste and reduce its carbon footprint, aligning with broader sustainability objectives.
“It’s a privilege to welcome DEFRA to the EE network and to support their mission to restore and enhance the environment for future generations. Their workers perform critical work across the UK, and reliable network coverage — especially during crises — is vital. For organizations with large fleets and field teams, staying connected on the go is essential for effective operations and public service,” said Andy Rowe, BT’s Director of Central Government.
This new contract highlights BT’s longstanding commitment to supporting vital public services. In addition to working with DEFRA, BT provides connectivity solutions to over 200 NHS trusts, 43 police forces, and 29 fire services. The company has also played a key role in emergency response since 1937, managing all incoming 999 calls — underscoring its pivotal role in ensuring reliable communication for public safety and environmental stewardship.
