Westcon-Comstor launches centralised energy management system

Global distributor Westcon-Comstor has implemented a new energy management system (EMS) across its European operations, reinforcing its commitment to data-driven sustainability and its ambitious net-zero targets.

Partnering with UK-based ecoDriver and delivery specialist Powercor, the company has expanded a successful pilot to a broader rollout, integrating real-time energy data from multiple sites into a unified platform.

This initiative is a core component of Westcon-Comstor’s strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with science-based targets. Operating in over 50 countries and distributing a wide range of technology products through extensive reseller and service provider networks, the company is leveraging the EMS to optimize energy use, increase transparency, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

The system employs advanced sub-metering to collect real-time electricity consumption data at each site, providing a comprehensive view accessible to regional sustainability teams. This reduces manual data collection efforts, allowing teams to focus on actionable insights. By analyzing energy use in conjunction with building occupancy and weather conditions, Westcon-Comstor aims to uncover hidden inefficiencies and target specific areas for emissions reduction.

As the platform is expanded to more facilities, it will enable benchmarking across locations, support remote monitoring, and facilitate internal competitions that motivate teams to lower energy use and emissions. The approach emphasizes ongoing, data-driven adjustments rather than one-time efficiency projects, aligning with the company’s goal of continuous environmental performance improvement.

Progress towards sustainability targets is evident, with 50% of Westcon-Comstor’s global electricity supply now sourced from renewables—up from 42% last year. The company has committed to achieving 100% renewable electricity by 2030 and aims to halve its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by the same year. It reports that it is already halfway to its Scope 1/2 reduction goal, crediting renewable sourcing, operational efficiencies, and strategic changes.

Sarah McGaw, Westcon-Comstor’s Global Head of Environmental Sustainability, emphasized the importance of data in driving their climate strategy: “Having a single source of truth for energy and emissions across Europe allows us to identify opportunities, set priorities, and act with confidence towards our ambitious climate goals.”

ecoDriver’s software provides detailed visualization and contextual data, enabling precise identification of inefficiencies. Powercor supports infrastructure deployment and ongoing maintenance, ensuring the system’s reliability. ecoDriver’s Matthew Boyham highlighted the significance of strategic sub-metering: “It’s a clear example of how granular data collection and analytics can accelerate decarbonization efforts.”

Looking ahead, Westcon-Comstor plans to extend the EMS to additional European sites, leveraging the expanding dataset to implement ongoing, measurable improvements in energy efficiency and emissions reductions. This scalable, continuous monitoring approach exemplifies how data-driven strategies are becoming central to corporate sustainability initiatives in the digital age.
