O2 (Virgin Media) has achieved a significant milestone by partnering with IONX Networks to successfully integrate a neutral host Small Cell into their live 5G Standalone (SA) core network.

This deployment supports their ongoing rollout of ultrafast mobile broadband, which is now available to over 70% of the UK population.

While the announcement does not specify the exact locations of the Small Cell deployment within O2’s network, the use of a neutral host setup indicates potential access for other operators, fostering a more collaborative and efficient infrastructure sharing model. This approach aligns with efforts to densify 5G coverage in a cost-effective and scalable manner.

“We have the largest 5GSA network in the UK, and this neutral host approach supports our mission to densify 5G in a scalable, cost-effective way — bringing the power of 5GSA to more people,” said Rob Joyce, Director of Mobile Access Engineering at Virgin Media O2.

The deployment adheres to the UK’s Joint Operator Technical Specifications (JOTS) framework and utilizes a unified, software-defined architecture supporting both MORAN (Multi-Operator RAN) and MOCN (Multi-Operator Core Network) features. This ensures interoperability and flexibility, allowing multiple operators to share infrastructure efficiently.

This milestone underscores O2’s commitment to expanding 5G coverage through innovative, shared infrastructure solutions, paving the way for broader 5G adoption, enhanced network performance, and more connected communities across the UK.
