The UK has taken a significant leap forward in digital innovation with the grand opening of the new UK Digital Twin Centre in Belfast.
Delivered by Digital Catapult and supported by funding from the Belfast Region City Deal and Innovate UK, the centre aims to accelerate the adoption of digital twin technology — a transformative tool set to generate an estimated £62 million in gross value added (GVA) for the UK economy over the next decade.
A digital twin is a sophisticated virtual replica of a physical asset, process, or system that facilitates real-time data integration. By bridging the physical and digital worlds, digital twins provide actionable insights that can optimise operational performance, reduce costs, and forecast outcomes before they occur. Since the project received funding, Digital Catapult has worked closely with industry partners and innovators to identify barriers to adoption and develop strategic solutions for wider deployment.
At the centre’s opening event, industry leaders from Artemis Technologies, Spirit AeroSystems, and Thales UK showcased how digital twins are already helping to solve complex operational challenges. Using state-of-the-art facilities — including a 360-degree immersive space and advanced technology laboratories — these early applications highlight the potential of digital twins to revolutionise sectors such as manufacturing, aerospace, maritime, and defense. The collaborative projects aim to improve product design, strengthen supply chains, and support decarbonisation efforts across industries.
The UK Digital Twin Centre offers a comprehensive programme designed to demystify and facilitate the practical deployment of digital twins. Through expert guidance, testing environments, and tools for experimentation and validation, the centre provides a clear pathway for businesses to integrate this emerging technology. It brings together capabilities across six key enabling technology areas — intelligence, data services, immersive experiences and user interfaces, cyber-physical systems, integration, and security — making digital twins more accessible and interoperable for diverse sectors and suppliers.

A key feature of the centre’s initiatives is its six-month Accelerator Programme, now open for pre-application expressions of interest. This programme aims to foster partnerships between technology SMEs and industry leaders, specifically targeting digital twin applications in maritime, aerospace, and defense sectors. Participants will benefit from mentorship, workshops, and expert support to develop proofs of concept in enabling technologies such as IoT, data integration, and simulation tools — bringing innovative solutions closer to real-world deployment.
