Secure I.T. Environments Ltd (SITE) has successfully completed significant upgrades to the cooling and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems at the University of Chichester’s Bishop Otter Campus data centre.

This upgrade reinforces the critical infrastructure that supports nearly 7,000 students and 600 staff across the university’s two campuses and 14 departments.

Initially established by SITE in 2008, the Bishop Otter data centre has been integral to the smooth operational functioning of the university, providing essential resources that enable students to achieve their academic goals. The recent project, which unfolded over a span of seven weeks, encompassed the phased decommissioning and replacement of four existing air handling units (AHUs). These have been upgraded to Multi-DENCO® close control air conditioning units, enhancing energy efficiency while ensuring precise control over both temperature and humidity levels. The project also involved replacing four external condensers and installing new sensors and energy monitoring equipment, along with necessary groundworks and flooring adjustments, all carried out within a live operational environment.

In conjunction with the cooling upgrades, SITE upgraded the data center’s existing three UPS units with two state-of-the-art 20kVA Riello Sentryum UPS units. This upgrade was meticulously phased to maintain the redundancy needed to protect against potential power failures.

“We are very pleased with how the project went, which was delivered on time and within the parameters agreed before the work commenced,” said Hayden Tarr, IT Services Development Manager at the University of Chichester.
