O2 (Virgin Media) launches pioneering 5G Giga Site in London

O2 (Virgin Media) has unveiled what it describes as a ‘first-of-its-kind’ mobile Giga Site in Paddington, London, equipped with Nokia’s latest dual-band massive MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) technology to enhance 5G network capacity and performance.

The company plans to deploy an additional 1,000 of these advanced sites across the UK in 2026 as part of its broader network upgrade strategy.

Massive MIMO technology, an evolution of traditional MIMO, uses potentially hundreds of antennas to serve multiple users simultaneously, dramatically increasing network efficiency. While standard MIMO might use between 2-8 antennas, Massive MIMO enables a vastly greater number, allowing for higher data throughput, better spectral efficiency, and improved coverage.

The Paddington site also leverages 78.8MHz of newly acquired radio spectrum from Vodafone UK, which has increased O2’s total spectrum holdings to around 30% of the UK’s spectrum. This spectrum layering combines low, mid, and high-band frequencies, further boosting network capacity and reliability. The new site is capable of delivering more than 10Gbps of throughput — more than the entire UK network at the peak of the London 2012 Olympics — and can support approximately 2,000 simultaneous HD video streams at 5Mbps each.

Dr. Robert Joyce, Director of Mobile Access Engineering at O2, highlighted the significance of the deployment, stating that it demonstrates O2’s commitment to investing in and innovating its network to improve customer experience. He emphasized that these new Giga Sites will deliver faster speeds, increased capacity, and more reliable connections, supporting nationwide upgrades as the company rolls out hundreds more across the country.

Mark Atkinson, Head of Radio Access Networks at Nokia, underscored the importance of the collaboration. He noted that this deployment represents one of Europe’s first dual-band Massive MIMO setups combined with TDD carrier aggregation, showcasing Nokia’s latest high-performance radios and versatile spectrum solutions. This technology allows operators to maximize their spectrum’s potential and unlock the next generation of 5G services.

O2’s ambitious plan to deploy 1,000 Giga Sites aligns with its £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan, aimed at modernizing and expanding its network infrastructure. Even though many existing smartphones may not have the multiple antennas seen in Massive MIMO base stations, users will still benefit from increased network capacity and more targeted, efficient signals, resulting in better service quality across the board.
