South Wales and Gwent Police to launch data-driven policing

08 May 2025

South Wales Police and Gwent Police have selected Simpson Associates to lead their joint Data Analytics Programme (JDAP), a strategic initiative designed to transform intelligence-led policing through advanced data insights. The programme aims to optimize resource allocation, improve operational efficiency, and enhance public safety by harnessing real-time data and predictive analytics.

Simpson Associates will develop a scalable Data Analytics Platform that integrates live operational data, making information more accessible for analysis and decision-making. The project focuses on three key areas:

• Infrastructure and Technology: Building a robust, scalable infrastructure to support both forces’ data needs.
• Data Analytics: Creating a unified platform that delivers comprehensive insights across both police departments.
• Advanced Insights: Equipping officers and analysts with predictive tools to support strategic, tactical, and operational decisions in real time.

This new platform is expected to provide a secure, high-performance environment that enhances forecasting, demand and capacity planning, and operational readiness. The benefits anticipated from the initiative include:

• Supporting evidence-based decision-making through trend analysis, forecasting, and predictive modeling of operational scenarios.
• Enabling more effective resource deployment by providing a centralized view of demand, capacity, and capability across both forces via a dedicated data office.
• Facilitating early identification of risks and emerging issues to help prevent crime and safeguard vulnerable populations.
• Offering officers and staff self-service access to accurate, timely, and consolidated data insights, reducing dependencies on siloed information and manual processes.

This project exemplifies how data and analytics can significantly improve policing effectiveness and community safety. With the first phase underway, both South Wales and Gwent Police, alongside Simpson Associates, are dedicated to delivering tangible benefits for officers, analysts, and the communities they serve.

“We are excited to partner with South Wales and Gwent Police on this transformative initiative. Our focus is on establishing a centralised data office and implementing the foundational capabilities needed for advanced analytics,” said Dave Kerby, Account Director for Blue Lights at Simpson Associates. “Our aim is to empower both forces with secure, scalable, and self-sufficient data tools that enable smarter decision-making, more efficient resource use, and ultimately, improved public safety. We’re proud to support a programme that aligns so closely with our shared vision for data-driven policing and look forward to seeing how JDAP enhances operational outcomes across both forces.”
