Neos Networks, the UK’s leading dedicated B2B network provider, announced today the successful completion of the first fibre installation under Project Reach, a historic initiative aimed at transforming the UK’s digital landscape over the next decade.

In collaboration with AmcoGiffen and Network Rail, Neos has begun laying new 432-count fibre cables along the Great Western Main Line, connecting London to Cardiff. This initial deployment marks the start of a nationwide rollout that will see at least 1,000km of high-grade fibre installed alongside Britain’s railways, establishing a faster, more secure foundation for the country’s digital economy.

As the most extensive core fibre network project in the UK in recent decades, Project Reach is designed to enhance nationwide connectivity from the ground up. By utilizing the rail network as a corridor for fibre deployment, Neos aims to take advantage of the most direct, secure, and future-proof routes available. The new infrastructure will support a wide range of applications, including rail operations, transport digitization, and the increasing demands from AI, cloud computing, and data centre expansion. This substantial investment will play a crucial role in determining Britain’s competitiveness in an increasingly data-driven global landscape.

The initial phase of fibre installation involved over 40 specialists working overnight to minimize disruption to passenger services. Through meticulous planning, precise coordination, and close collaboration with Network Rail, the fibre pull was completed on schedule while adhering to strict safety standards. This achievement sets a benchmark for the entire rollout programme and demonstrates the efficiency of Neos Networks’ delivery model.

“This is about more than just laying fibre; it’s about building the backbone for Britain’s digital future. AI, cloud services, and data centres depend on fibre infrastructure. With Project Reach, we’re ensuring the UK remains competitive on the global stage for decades to come,” said Neos CEO Lee Myall.

“This milestone marks the beginning of an ambitious programme that will strengthen the UK’s digital network for generations. Our team’s expertise and collaboration with Neos Networks and Network Rail have been key to this success,” said John Booth, Managing Director of AmcoGiffen.

“This milestone demonstrates how public-private collaboration can deliver tangible benefits for the nation. Project Reach is modernizing Britain’s rail communications infrastructure while laying the groundwork for future digital growth,” said Harriet Hepburn, Network Rail’s Director of Corporate Finance, Partnerships, and Retail.

Network Rail’s Wales & Western region is leading the initial fibre pulls, with further installations planned across the country through the end of 2025. By the conclusion of the project, Neos Networks will have laid at least 1,000km of high-grade fibre along railway corridors nationwide, providing the scalable and secure connectivity vital to supporting the UK’s rapidly expanding data economy.
