LNER enhances mobile and Wi-Fi connectivity along Northumberland line

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) has announced significant improvements to mobile phone and Wi-Fi connectivity for passengers traveling along a scenic 45-mile stretch of the East Coast Main Line (ECML) through Northumberland.

This upgrade results from a collaborative effort involving Railsite Telecom, mobile networks O2 and Vodafone, and local authorities, aiming to improve overall connectivity in this rural and coastal region.

The initiative focuses on deploying new mobile phone masts between Newcastle and Berwick-upon-Tweed, which will help eliminate coverage ‘not-spots’ and provide more reliable service for train passengers, local residents, and businesses. This development builds on previous efforts, including O2’s May 2025 installation of a custom-built Distributed Antenna System (DAS) to boost coverage in challenging tunnel sections such as ‘Gasworks’ and ‘Copenhagen’.

The project was guided by collaboration with Northumberland County Council, which identified eight strategic locations where new infrastructure could maximise coverage benefits. James Downey, Finance Director at LNER, highlighted the importance of the partnership, noting that the beautiful but geographically challenging Northumberland section had historically suffered from poor mobile performance. He emphasised that the new infrastructure not only enhances passenger experience but also supports local communities.

Councillor Glen Sanderson, Leader of Northumberland County Council, praised the initiative, emphasising its importance for safety, economic development, and social inclusion in rural areas. He pointed out that improved connectivity benefits residents and visitors alike, demonstrating how cooperation between government, the rail industry, and telecom providers can deliver meaningful regional improvements.
