Global Switch signs eight-year renewable power deal with RWE for London data centre

Global Switch has announced an eight-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with RWE to supply wind-generated electricity for its London Docklands data centre. The deal involves sourcing around 70 GWh of renewable energy annually from RWE’s Brechfa Forest West onshore wind farm in south-west Wales, with supplies commencing in January 2026 and continuing through 2033.

The Brechfa Forest West wind farm, which became operational in 2018, comprises 28 turbines with a total capacity of 57.4 MW. RWE, described as the UK’s largest power generator and a global renewables operator, will provide the renewable energy that will power the London site, reinforcing Global Switch’s commitment to sustainability.

Ulf Kerstin, RWE’s Chief Commercial Officer for Supply & Trading, linked the deal to the increasing energy demands driven by digital transformation and AI. “As digital services and AI adoption grow, data centres’ energy requirements are expanding,” he said. “We are pleased to partner with Global Switch, adding to our existing collaborations with data centre operators relying on low-carbon electricity.”

This PPA aligns with Global Switch’s broader goal to achieve 100% renewable energy sourcing by 2030. Peter Domeney, COO of Global Switch, highlighted the significance: “Our agreement with RWE is a vital step in our journey toward sustainability, connecting the forests of Wales with the most advanced AI and high-performance computing deployments in the world. It exemplifies our commitment to environmental responsibility.”

Located in London’s business district, the Docklands data centre benefits from secured power capacity of 224 MVA. The company is actively densifying and expanding this facility to meet rising demand from AI and high-performance computing applications. Notably, the site has been chosen by CoreWeave for deploying Nvidia H100 and H200 GPUs, and recently showcased liquid cooling technologies, including systems not previously implemented in Europe.

Global Switch aims for an annualised Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.2 across its European portfolio and has secured Science Based Targets for emissions reduction, as well as participating in the European Code of Conduct for Energy Efficiency in Data Centres.

RWE continues to invest heavily in expanding its renewable energy portfolio, including offshore and onshore wind, solar, and battery storage projects. Its energy trading division manages the dispatch and optimization of over 2,000 employees trading electricity, gas, and emissions allowances, positioning the company to meet rising energy demands driven by AI, electrification, and decarbonization efforts.

Operating city-centre, carrier- and cloud-neutral data centres across Europe and Asia-Pacific, Global Switch remains at the forefront of sustainable data infrastructure development.
