Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a major initiative to provide 100,000 people in the UK with essential skills in artificial intelligence (AI) by 2030. The commitment comes as research indicates that one in three UK businesses currently lack the necessary digital skills to effectively adopt AI technologies.
The announcement underscores the urgent need to bridge the skills gap in critical areas such as AI, cybersecurity, and Big Data to support the UK’s rapidly evolving digital economy. A key vehicle for achieving this goal will be the AWS Skills to Jobs Tech Alliance program, launched in June 2023 as part of a global effort. This program brings together businesses, government bodies, and educational institutions to offer practical, hands-on training to students, professionals, and job seekers, aligning their skills with the demands of the modern digital economy.
The UK is experiencing a significant surge in AI adoption, with a 33% year-on-year increase. While businesses are rapidly implementing AI solutions, the pace of adoption is currently outpacing the availability of skilled talent. This makes initiatives like the Skills to Jobs program crucial for fostering long-term growth and innovation.
Over half of UK businesses (52%) are now integrating AI technologies, a substantial rise from 39% the previous year. Importantly, 92% of these businesses report increased revenues as a result of AI adoption, highlighting the transformative potential of AI across industries and emphasizing the growing importance of workforce upskilling.
The AWS research also reveals that while larger enterprises are quick to embrace AI, startups are leading the charge in developing AI-driven products and services. Currently, 36% of startups have integrated AI into their products, compared to 25% of larger enterprises.
Allison Kay, VP and Managing Director of AWS in the UK, made the announcement, emphasizing that the scale of AI adoption in the UK is poised to surpass previous technological revolutions like the landline, mobile phone, and the internet.
“By 2030, our aim is to provide 100,000 UK students with pathways to skills in AI, cybersecurity, and Big Data,” said Kay. “We’re thrilled to be joined on this quest by organizations like Accenture, Deloitte, government bodies, and higher education institutions, so that, together, we are offering these students every opportunity to thrive in today’s digital economy.”

The Skills to Jobs program aims to move beyond theoretical knowledge, offering practical, hands-on training to prepare participants for the AI-driven workforce of the future and potentially inspire the next generation of digital pioneers.
